Record-breaking Gor Mahia retain KPL title

Gor Mahia FC completed their march to a record-breaking 17th Kenyan Premier League (KPL) title on Saturday as they defeated arch-rivals AFC Leopards 2-0 at the Kasarani Stadium.

The win took their points tally to an unassailable 71 points, 20 clear of their closest assailant Bandari FC who were 1-0 winners over Nzoia Sugar in an earlier matched played in Mombasa’s Mbaraki Stadium.

Boniface Omondi and Bernard Ondiek provided the goals as Gor held on to their title, doing so with six matches to spare; two more than they did last term during head coach Dylan Kerr’s debut year.

Kerr fielded an under-strength squad in anticipation of Wednesday’s crunch away trip to USM Alger for their final CAF Confederation Cup group stage clash but Leopards were second best again as they fell 2-0 down at half time.

Omondi opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark, racing onto Samuel Onyango’s pass from outside the area before dribbling past defender Mike Kibwage and unleashing an unstoppable shot past Ezekiel Owade.

Leopards were beaten again eight minutes later with Ondiek placing Gor’s second goal into Owade’s roof after a sleek move involving Karim Nzigiyimana and Omondi.

Whyvonne Isuza had the opportunity to half Leopards’ deficit from the penalty spot but the midfielder missed the target having sent goalkeeper Fredrick Odhiambo the wrong way.

Isuza had the opportunity to atone for his miss in the second half but Odhiambo did well to get down quick to save from close range after Alex Orotomal had set him with a back heel pass.

In Narok, visiting Kariobangi Sharks stunned Sofapaka FC 1-0 to pile more misery on the 2009 winners who have now lost three of their last four matches.

At the Chemelil Complex , Ulinzi Stars bounced back to winning ways in a 2-0 victory over Chemelil. Elvis Nandwa and Enos Ochieng scored on either half to win the points for the soldiers. Ulinzi now move a place up into 5th on 41 points as the sugar millers stay on 15th with 28 points.

Elsewhere, Sony Sugar’s five game winning streak came to an end as they played to a barren draw against Tusker at the Awendo Green stadium. The brewers hit the 40-point mark with the point and move a spot down to sixth as Sony remain on eighth with 37 points.

Kakamega Homeboyz were 3-2 winners against Wazito in a lunchtime kick off after overturning Wazito’s 30th minute lead netting the equaliser before the halftime whistle.

Homeboyz scored twice in the second half on the 49th before Wazito leveled the tie on the 56th and later in the 62nd, they got the decisive goal to walk away with the three points.

Homeboyz go to tenth on 37 points whilst Wazito are on 17th on 24 points.
