Report on resumption of sports to be ready in a week

The Ministry of Sports is set to release protocols for the resumption of sports that had been disrupted by Covid-19 pandemic, Sports Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Noor Hassan Noor has said.

Noor revealed that development of the protocols are nearing completion and will be handed over to the National Covid-19 Response team in the next seven days.

The official was speaking at the Kericho Green stadium when he presided over the opening of the facility which had been undergoing refurbishment.

Noor has been chairing a 25-member committee set up by Sports CS Amina Mohamed that was tasked to draw up protocols and advice on the resumption of sports by engaging all key stakeholders.

“We are working seriously to come up with protocols for resumption of sports in due course. We are alive to the fact that Sports is a key sector like other sectors in Kenya thus the need for resumption as soon as possible, ” Hassan added.

Athletics Kenya (AK) president Major General (Rtd) Jackson Tuwei, Kericho governor Paul Chepkwony were present at the event.

Noor said he was pleased with the new look stadium adding he believes it has met both national and international status and will take sports in the region to the next level.

He lauded Kericho County for being one of the counties committed to develop sports facilities which will go along way in taking sports not only in the county but also the country.

“Sports is a key sector and it is an investment like any other. So I laud counties like Kericho that are in the forefront in developing this sector. It will go in assisting the youth nurture talents and to take sports as their careers,” Hassan said.

Tuwei on his part said the new development in terms of the facilities was a milestone in sports in Kericho County.

He said AK has commended the county government for laying synthetic track on the stadium which he said will go along way in taking sports a notch higher.

He said there was need for little improvement on the pavilions so that the stadium could meet both national and international status ..

Governor Chepkwony disclosed the revamping and refurbishment of the Kericho Green stadium cost the County Sh100m which include the cost synthetic track and pavilions which expected to accommodate close to 20,000 people.

Chepkwony said the county is committed to availing all the sports equipment and facilities at the stadium in line with encouraging youths to embrace various sport disciplines especially field events.
