Odhiambo hangs up boots after 12 memorable seasons

Odhiambo, a flanker and utility lock, has officially announced his retirement after 12 years of dedicated service that helped transform rugby in Kenya’s South Coast region—a place not traditionally known for the sport. The club lauded him as a “true servant, leader, and warrior,” celebrating a career that inspired young players and lifted the Pirates into the national spotlight.

Odhiambo’s leadership journey began at Kaya Tiwi, where he captained the team to two consecutive National 7s appearances in 2017 and 2018. His on-field brilliance and ability to galvanize teammates quickly became evident, paving the way for bigger achievements.

In 2019, he guided the Pirates to a memorable run as runners-up at the prestigious Christie’s 7s tournament, an early sign of the team’s rising status in Kenyan rugby. His crowning moment as captain came during the 2022 National Sevens Circuit, where he led South Coast Pirates to the Team Spirit Overall Award, reflecting the squad’s growing cohesion and competitive spirit.

The pinnacle of Odhiambo’s club career arrived in the 2023/24 season, when the Pirates clinched the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Championship title, earning a historic promotion to the Kenya Cup, the country’s top-tier rugby competition.

Beyond the accolades, Odhiambo also served as a player representative, advocating for his teammates and helping steer the club’s growth off the field. His relentless commitment, skill, and sportsmanship have left an indelible mark on the Pirates and the entire South Coast rugby community.
