Safaricom Lewa Marathon Set For July

Speaking during the launch, Safaricom Chief Executive Bob Collymore said the marathon has had a huge impact in the 15 years it has been in existence by transforming lives of communities in Lewa and conservation of the endangered species.

“What started as a noble idea 16 years ago with only 180 runners has grown to become one of the biggest events not only in the Kenya but also globally," said Mr Collymore.

This year's event is targeting over 1,200 runners from over 20 countries around the world.

The marathon, launched in 2000, has so far raised over USD 4.9 million, funds that have been used to alleviate poverty, reduce wildlife-human conflict, and improve education and livelihoods in around the conservancy.

The event organised by Safaricom Limited in partnership with Tusk Trust and Lewa Conservancy will run under the theme Run for a good cause with key focus on raising funds for wildlife protection and supporting community projects around the conservancy.

The 2014 Safaricom Marathon in Lewa was won by Fridah Lodepa and Philemon Baaru in the full marathon respectively. Registration for the Safaricom Lewa Marathon will kick off on February 25 2015.
