Governor Johnson Sakaja has thrown Nairobi’s doors wide open as the capital prepares to host the opening leg of the HSBC World Rugby SVNS 2 tournament this weekend at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Standing at the centre of the buildup, the Nairobi Governor described the tournament as a defining moment for the city and the country’s rugby ambitions.

With global teams, officials and fans streaming in, Sakaja framed the two-day event as more than just a weekend of sport but as proof that Nairobi can carry the weight of world class competition.

“It is a great pleasure and honor to welcome the world to the City under the Sun, Nairobi, as we host the inaugural HSBC Sevens Tour Tournament, a historic moment not only for our city but for the entire rugby fraternity,” Sakaja said.

He noted that being selected to stage the curtain raiser of the second tier world series reflects confidence in Kenya’s organizational capacity and growing stature in international rugby circles.

Sakaja also praised the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) and tournament partners for their extensive preparations, assuring visiting teams of a vibrant and well-coordinated experience.

Kenya men’s rugby sevens team, Shujaa, and their women’s counterpart, Lionesses, will carry the hopes of the home crowd as they seek to set the early pace in Division 2 and push for swift promotion back to the top tier.

Sakaja paid tribute to Kenyan fans, often dubbed rugby’s “eighth player,” urging them to fill Nyayo and power the teams forward.

“Nairobi remains open and ready to host even more global sporting events. To all our visitors, karibu Kenya, karibu Nairobi. Feel the energy, embrace the culture, and enjoy the game,” he added.

The men’s teams include the USA, Uruguay, Germany, Belgium, Canada and hosts Shujaa.

On the other hand, the home girls, Kenya Lionesses, will battle South Africa, Brazil, China, Spain and Argentina.
