Strathmore University women team head coach Meshack Senge is looking to build on their big win over Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) as the hockey season kicked off in earnest at the weekend.

The Scorpions thrashed fellow students JKUAT 9-0 at the City Park to send shock waves in a league that has for long been dominated by serial winners Telkom.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Senge pointed out that the huge win was propelled by his charges ability to strictly adhere and execute the games tactical plan.

“We have a new format which we are trying to implement and it worked well for us. However, that was just one game and we hope to continue on the same note since the season has just begun,’” said Senge.

Having finished as runners-up last season behind defending champions Telkom, Senge has outlined his desire to fight for the elusive title.

“Our aim is to be the best. Last season we could not achieve that but this time round we will also try to put our best foot forward and see what happens. We will take each game at a time,” added Senge.

Elsewhere, Parklands Sports Club stretched their unbeaten run to four games on the bounce after beating United States International University-Africa (USIU) 3-2 win in the men’s Premier League match played at the same venue.

Parkroad Badgers meanwhile edged Kenya College of Accountancy University (KCAU) 3-0 as both teams began life in the Super League after they were relegated to the second-tier last season.

In another Super League match, Technical University of Kenya (TUK) took the bragging rights of the University derby after they beat Multimedia University (MMU) – men 2-0.

In the corresponding women’s league, MMU-women lost back-to-back matches, falling 1-0 to debutants Oranje Leonas on Saturday before capitulating to a 5-0 loss in the hands of Vikings on Sunday.
