A highly anticipated High School football match between Shanderema Boys and Mukumu Boys was suspended on Sunday at Solyo School in Shinyalu, Kakamega County, following security concerns.
The suspension came
after unrest among Mukumu fans, which made it impossible for the match to
continue. The Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Coordinator,
Donald Muhanji, confirmed the decision, stating that the fixture would be rescheduled
to a later date and venue.
The controversy arose
when Mukumu Boys scored a goal, but the referee and assistant referee took time
before officially disallowing it. This delay led to frustration among Mukumu
supporters, resulting in heightened tensions. To ensure safety, officials
decided to suspend the match.
At the time of the
suspension, both teams were tied at 1-1 early in the second half.
Historic
Rivalry
The rivalry between
Shanderema and Mukumu Boys has deep roots in high school football. While Mukumu
Boys have struggled in recent years, Shanderema Boys have maintained dominance
as the defending champions of Kakamega East.
This final was
expected to be a fierce contest, as the winner would secure a spot in the
Kakamega County stage.
In another match, St. Agnes Shibuye secured their place as Kakamega East representatives after a hard-fought victory.
St. Agnes Girls defeated Magale 1-0 in the final held at Lugala. Both teams had won their semifinal matches through post-match penalties to earn their place in the final.
