Shujaa and McGrath keen to finish Series season on a high
Kenya Sevens head coach Damian McGrath says he is confident
they will finish the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series on a high ahead of the
final round this weekend in Carson California, USA.
In his assessment of the three months since he was appointed
to lead the Shujaa, McGrath said he has found the loopholes to fill to produce
positive results.
“The players have put a lot of hard work in training and I
need to watch as many of them as I can because every tournament is important
and we want to go to Los Angeles Sevens and win, but in future we need to
access all the players and see what they’re capable of,” said McGrath.
McGrath made two changes with Herman Humwa and Levy Oluoch
being dropped for Jeff Oluoch and Sammy Oliech.
“Off course one of the things I have to look for is for
players who’re available because one thing is that I inherited a contracted
group who have their contract up to the World Cup so I have limited players to
choose from that’s why I made only two changes,” added McGrath.
McGrath also said he had a chance to watch three to four
national sevens circuits across the country and together with his technical
bench they have spotted four to five talented players who they can include in
the senior team in the coming months.
Shujaa will kick off their pool D campaign against Samoa on
Saturday at 8:26pm before facing England at 11:10pm.
Their last pool match will be against Scotland on Sunday at
2:21am.
Shujaa are currently 13th with 38 points after poor outings
in Vancouver, London, Singapore and Toulouse sevens where they collected a
single point in each of the tournament.
No team will be relegated this season after the series was
hit by the Covid 19 pandemic.
