Shujaa to face Tonga in World Cup opener
The national rugby sevens team will face Tonga in the Rugby
World Cup sevens opener at the Cape Town Stadium, South Africa on the 9th of
September this year.
If head coach Damien McGrath’s men win the clash they will
battle it out with Argentina in the round of 16 at the same stadium that same
day.
Kenya has reached the World Rugby Sevens semi-finals twice,
first in 2009 in Dubai under the late Benjamin Ayimba and second in 2013 in
Moscow under Mike Friday.
South Africa won the staging rights for the World Cup in 2019
and will become the first African nation to stage the tournament.
The South Africans are a sevens world series powerhouse but
have appeared in the World Cup Sevens final only once, in 1997.
