Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna on Wednesday raised serious concerns over the state of affairs at the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU), calling for urgent investigations into its operations, financial conduct, and governance.

Speaking during a Senate sitting, Sifuna sought a detailed statement from the Senate Committee on Labour and Social Welfare on what he described as a matter of national concern.

“I rise pursuant to Standing Order 53(1) to seek a statement from the Committee on Labour and Social Welfare on the state of affairs at the Kenya Rugby Union,” said Sifuna.

The Senator asked the committee to provide a comprehensive report on the Union’s operations and financial standing, including a breakdown of sponsorship funds received from corporate entities between 2022 and 2025, as well as detailed expenditures during the same period.

Sifuna also demanded clarity on the current status of a report filed by KRU Chairman Sasha Mutai to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), which alleged criminal and fraudulent activities within the Union. He urged the committee to investigate whether all serving directors at KRU possess the requisite qualifications to hold office.

“There is need for transparency. The committee should establish whether governance structures at KRU meet the required standards, and what measures are being taken to resolve internal challenges before we face potential sanctions from World Rugby,” he stated.

His sentiments were strongly supported by Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, who urged KRU to embrace transparency and open its books to scrutiny.

“I hope KRU shall be open to this kind of scrutiny,” said Cheruiyot. “And perhaps even as a House, we can be open to assist them achieve their objectives.”

The bipartisan support signals growing concern in Parliament over governance in sports federations, and sets the stage for what could be a pivotal moment for Kenyan rugby.

The Kenya Rugby Union is currently under pressure following internal wrangles, and questions surrounding financial management.

The Senate Committee is expected to respond with a comprehensive report in the coming weeks.
