Kenya rugby sevens head coach Innocent ‘Namcos’ Simiyu says their target in this year’s Safari Sevens is to improve their performance from their last tournament in Vancouver, Canada.
The former Shujaa captain said he wants to
work on kickoff, ruck, defence and attack.
“Our target in this year’s safari sevens is
to improve from our last outing in Canada to work on our kickoff, attack and
defense,” said Simiyu.
Simiyu added that the tournament will be a
big boost to his team looking at the quality of the teams to play in the
weekends tourney.
“We’re happy because the level of
competition is high and good and it will give us the opportunity to test on
what we’re working on,” added Simiyu.
Simiyu added that he’ll field young players
in the tourney after some of his key players got injured in Vancouver.
“Seven players got injured in Canada and
this will give young guys an opportunity to fly Kenya’s flag having in mind
that some players will be playing for other teams like KCB RFC and Kenya Morans
in the same tournament,” said Namcos.
Simiyu said the tournament will give
exposure to many rookies in the country with Kenya rugby 15’s preparing for
their South Africa tour next month.
Shujaa are the top seed in this year’s
edition and in pool A alongside Zimbabwe, and debutants Germany and Nigerian
side Stallion Sevens.
