Spain call up Cazorla for the first time since 2015

Villarreal midfielder Santi Cazorla has been called up to the Spain national side for the first time in four years.

The former Arsenal midfielder spent over two years on the sidelines with a recurring Achilles tendon injury which saw him have up to 10 separate operations.

Spain manager Luis Enrique has rewarded the 34-year-old for his impressive form in La Liga for Villarreal this season with a first call-up since 2015.

The Spaniard has made 45 appearances for the Yellow Submarine across all competitions, scoring seven goals, after leaving Arsenal at the end of last season.

Enrique named his squad ahead of this summer’s European Qualifiers against Faroe Island on June 7 and Sweden on June 10.

His last appearance for Spain was in a 2-0 friendly win over England in November 2015.

Elsewhere, Real Sociedad attacker Mikel Oyarzabal also earned his first call-up while Real Madrid playmaker Isco returned to the national setup after missing out on Enrique’s last selection.
