Starlets report to camp this afternoon ahead of AWCON duty

The national women football team, Harambee Starlets, report to camp this afternoon to begin preparations for the forthcoming African Women Cup of Nations finals set for Ghana.

Head coach David Ouma is expected to lead her charges to a light workout beginning 3pm at the Utalii grounds as they race to polish their rough edges ahead of the continental showpiece.

“We are hitting the training camp today… The time we have before the kick off of the continental tournament is very limited meaning we need to spend a lot of time training,”Ouma said.

“All this will be achieved if the players I called up will co-operate . I urge them to be very cooperative for that period and I believe we will have done a lot by the time of the tournament begins,” Ouma, who previously coached Sofapaka, said.

In the meantime, Football Kenya Federation has lined up two friendly matches against Uganda and Ghana and Ouma believes the warm- up matches will do them good.

“Such friendlies will gauge us more and will give me the opportunity to know our strengths. The federation hasn’t set the dates yet  but it  will communicated.”

The Starlets are pooled in Group B together with the champions Nigeria, South Africa and Zambia. The tourney runs from November 17-December 1, with  the top three nations earning automatic qualifications to the 2019 FIFA women’s World Cup finals to be held in France.

Meanwhile, Vihiga Queens head coach Alex Alumira has been appointed to select an All Starlets select team that will face the national team Harambee Starlets in Wednesday’s friendly match at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Alumira who won the Women Premier League last season with Vihiga Queens will act as the head coach assisted by Thika Queens coach Benta Achieng while Justine Okiring from Trans Nzoia will be the team manager.

His brief is to select players from the league who failed to make a cut to the senior national side and prepare  them  for the friendly against the Starlets who are preparing for the Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) scheduled to take place in Ghana next month.  The contest is penciled for Wednesday from 10am.
