Strathmore Blades eye strong start in KNBL season opener

Strathmore Blades head coach Tony Ochieng has expressed confidence in his squad ahead of the 2026 Kenya Men's Basketball Premier League season tip-off, with the tactician targeting maximum points from their opening weekend fixtures.

The Blades will begin their campaign against Stanbic Shields on Friday at the Nyayo Gymnasium before returning to the same venue on Sunday to face league newcomers Moischers.

Ochieng revealed that despite their opponents having strengthened key areas during the transfer window by bringing in shooting guards and tall players to reinforce both the backcourt and frontcourt, he is upbeat that they will emerge winners.

“Yes, I understand they have done some recruitment, some shooting guards, and some tall players. For us, we are ready. All our departments, that is offensive and defensive, we've worked so hard this season and we are ready to top on them,” he said.

The coach is also wary of the intensity his side is likely to face, noting the fast-paced and pressing style of some opponents.

“Stanbic has been playing very fast games, they press a lot. For us, we want to take advantage of some of the loopholes, and I know my players will be up to the task. For sure here, we need the points here, and I'm looking for the four points of the weekend,” Ochieng noted.

With renewed depth and clear ambitions, the Blades will aim to make a strong early statement and secure a perfect start to their 2026 campaign.
