Migori Youth head coach Samuel Owano has attributed his side’s impressive first-leg performance in the National Super League (NSL) to a strong start that set the tone for the season.
Speaking to Citizen Digital after the conclusion of the first leg last weekend, Owano revealed that winning their opening three matches gave his young squad the belief and motivation needed to sustain consistent performances throughout the campaign.
"Most of our players came directly from High School, they had no experience playing in the league but the confidence to play as a team is what made us win our first three matches and it helped the finish the first leg in a better position," he said.
The tactician noted that the team began the season by trusting players who had just completed secondary school, a bold move that has paid off.
According to Owano, the confidence, discipline and commitment shown by the youthful squad have been key factors behind Migori Youth’s rise to the top of the table.
The coach also reiterated the club’s long-standing reputation as a breeding ground for attacking talent. He pointed to former Migori Youth striker Paul Odhiambo, now with Kakamega Homeboyz and currently the second-highest scorer in the FKF Premier League, as a clear example of the club’s development pathway.
Owano further highlighted Syphas Otieno, who is currently leading the NSL goal-scoring charts, as the latest product of the club’s striker-production line.
Looking ahead, Migori Youth have set their sights firmly on promotion to the top flight.
"We are lucky to have the best strikers in our squad, Syphas was about to give up because of lack of playing time at MOFA. We will know his fate when the season ends," Owano added.
The tactician confirmed that the club has strengthened its squad during the transfer window to improve competition within the team and maintain their momentum in the second leg.
Migori Youth currently sit top of the NSL standings with 37 points, level with Mombasa United but ahead on goal difference, placing them in a strong position as the promotion race intensifies.
