Stuttering KOgalo face NSL leaders Nzoia threat in Shield

Gor Mahia Head Coach, Jose ‘Ze Maria’ Ferreira is confident his side can still achieve the domestic treble despite the recent slump in form when they face high flying National Super League (NSL) leaders, Nzoia United in the GOTv Shield round of 16.

The 15-time champions made history last season, going the entire 30 rounds without tasting defeat in the league, on their way to their third title in as many years before dispatching Sony Sugar 2-1 to claim the Top 8 title.

Second-tier side Nakumatt FC eventually ended their hopes of claiming the treble after they narrowly overcame K’Ogalo on penalties in the Shield semi finals.

The Kenya Premier League (KPL) giants will however be hoping to put history behind them as they look to better their exemplary season when they face the unbeaten NSL front runners in Mumias.

The Sugar Millers will be looking to rubber stamp their credentials when they come up against the misfiring K’ Ogalo side.

“Gor is a big club and we go into every match looking for a win; we are only four points behind Tusker in the league, in the quarter finals of the Shield and the final of the Top 8 tournament so we are trying to make sure we win all of them. The prospect of getting the treble is still alive,” the Brazilian tactician told Citizen Digital.

The reigning champions have flattered to deceive, racking up three consecutive barren draws with their flailing attack coming under heavy criticism.

“In training, we have been focusing on the attack because in our three previous games we were not able to find the back of the net even though we were playing well but to win games we have to score.

“It will be a difficult game for us because our record against Nzoia is not that good so we have to approach the match with a serious mentality. We’ve had enough time to prepare so I believe the progress will show on the pitch,” the K’Ogalo boss added.

In other matches, holders Bandari will welcome second tier side Bidco United to their Mbaraki background while AFC Leopards will be hoping to extinguish their club woes when they travel to Kisumu to face Western Stima.

In Nakuru, Ulinzi will be taking on in-form side Chemelil Sugar in an all KPL affair while Thika United battle it out with KCB.
