Support Women’s football, Vihiga striker Engesha tells gov’t

Vihiga Queens striker Terry Engesha has urged the government to support women football fully adding that the game has recorded massive growth. Terry who is a joint top scorer with 12 goals so far has expressed her disappointments at the support accorded to women football noting that they should be given equal treatment as men. Engesha was on the score sheet last Saturday as her club thrashed Wadadia 2-1 at the Mumias Sports Complex, an outcome that cemented their Zone B league to 24 points, eight above second-placed Trans Nzoia Falcons while Kisumu All Starlets lie third with 14 points. “As a lady footballer I am not satisfied on how we are being treated in the Premier League as well in Division One. Most of the clubs fail to honour their fixtures due to lack of money while players go for many days without allowances,” she lamented. “There are so many talents here and it’s high time the Ministry of Sports fully supported the league for the betterment of the players. Players who take part in the league are the ones earning national call ups, so how do you expect their morale to be boosted if they play while hungry?” Engesha who rose from TarTar Girls in West Pokot to become a house hold name as far as women football is concerned has also urged  the fans to turn up and give them support adding that women football has grown and should be watched by many fans, just like the men’s game. “Surely I don’t see any difference between men and women football, fans should turn up and give us support once the Government allows them in, in line with the Covid-19 protocols. As a player I would really love to be supported by many fans, that will give me morale to continue showcasing my talent and scoring many goals,” she explained. The KWPL league which entered its second round last weekend will continue this weekend with eight matches on cards and Engesha will be aiming to add to her goal tally as they host SEP Ladies at the Mumias Sports Complex. “We are hosting SEP this weekend and I am aiming to score more goals. Currently I am the top scorer together with Ruth Chebungei from Wadadia with 12 goals but I am hoping for more goals this weekend,” she concluded.
