Despite crushing
KU ORYX 49-10 in the national women’s basketball premier league match played at
the USIU grounds over the weekend, Strathmore Swords head coach Ronnie Owino is
not satisfied with his girls’ performance.
“We did not really play well; we are still
unfit. We need to work on our fitness. We were bigger than them in terms of
size, something we failed to take advantage of.
We need to play
better moving forward and by doing so we need to improve on all areas including
endurance and skills,” Owino said.
Strathmore have
accumulated 29 points from 17 matches, winning 12 and registering five defeats
while KU have only managed to register two wins, losing 12 in the 14 matches
played so far and have 16 points.
They travel to Mombasa
to face undefeated Kenya Ports Authority on Saturday at Makande Gymnasium.
In their weekend
win against KU ORYX, Strathmore started off well in the first quarter winning
11-03 before another win of 15-05 in the second quarter as they took a lead of
26-08 at the break.
The Swords
continued to show impressive display in the second half as they won third
quarter 05-00 before winding up with a massive win of 18-02 in the last
quarter.
Joy Mupalia and
Vanesa Mariska were shining stars for Strathmore dropping 21 points combined
while Esther Aliyah had five for ORYX.
Elsewhere,
Ulinzi Warriors head coach Bernard Mufutu has attributed their weekend win to
solidarity. This is after defeating Strathmore Blades 56-47 in a tight match
played at the same venue.
The win took the
soldiers total tally to 26 after playing 15 matches, winning 11 and losing
four.
“It was a tight
match, we controlled the boards well, guys shared the ball well and the
consistency was okay. We had some lapses here and there but the better part of
the game we played consistently,” he concluded.
