Hela U-19 football teams have got what it takes to win the Costa Daurada Cup in
Salou, Spain - head coach Stanley Okumbi has said.
Both
boys and girls teams won their respective semi finals on Wednesday to storm to
the finals set for Thursday afternoon, giving Okumbi the optimism that they can
indeed stop the hosts.
The
tournament which has attracted celebrated teams like PSG, Bayern Munich,
Girona, Malaga, Olympic Madrid, and Sporting de Portugal saw the boys team
defeat Berango FT 2-0 in the closely contested match played at the Futbol Salou
Stadium.
Kenya's
goals were scored by Austine Odongo and Bandari FC's left winger William
Gitamu.
Okumbi's
boys will now meet Usurbil FT in the final which will be a repeat of their
final pool match, which they won 2-0.
“I
think our loss against Nastic Soccer Academy on Tuesday was a wakeup call and
now my boys are in a good shape going to the final. The boys are improving each
day. Our match against Berango FT was a tough one as the opponents picked up well
more so in the second half, but we overcome them,” noted Okumbi.
The girls’
team, coached by Jackline Juma, will be taking on Sporting de Portugal in the
final after defeating Antiguoko Ke 1-0 in the semis thanks to Elizabeth Mideva's
goal.
"We
played against a good side, but we composed ourselves hence the good result. I'm
proud of the ladies. We are hoping to win the final and make the country
proud," said coach Juma.
The ladies final will also be a repeat after they defeated the Portuguese side 3-2 in pool matches.
