The second leg of Athletics Kenya (AK) track and field that was set to begin on Friday at the Thika Municipal Stadium has been moved to Nairobi.

The event was delayed by heavy rains coupled with the bad state of Thika Stadium which necessitated AK to search for a new venue.

AK senior vice president Paul Mutwii said the event which was earmarked for the Central region will now be held at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in Langata.

“From what we have been told by the weatherman, heavy rains could also be witnessed tomorrow and therefore we have decided to look for a new venue. With Kasarani Stadium being closed for renovations, we have requested KDF for the Ulinzi Sports Complex where we will host the event tomorrow,” Mutwii said.

He further explained that the event will only be held on Saturday hence all the events will head to straight finals.

National athletics coach Julius Kirwa said the muddy pitch exposed athletes to serious injuries, thus the move to cancel the first day of the event.

“We know the athletes really wanted to compete since it is the start of the season but again we cannot allow them to use this dangerous surface,” said Kirwa

The veteran tactician said he is closely monitoring athletes at the weekend meets ahead of a busy track season that will commence at the African Games in March and will climax at the Paris Olympics in August.

The first weekend meeting was held last weekend at the Moi Stadium in Kisumu.
