Deposed Kenya Women Premier League (KWPL) champions Thika Queens have cited injuries to key players as the biggest reason behind their dismal display this season.

Thika Queens currently sit fifth on the league standings with 33 points having seen Vihiga Queens reclaimed the title last weekend.

Team Manager Glenston Muganga says they were mostly derailed by injury to the club’s top scorer Wendy Achieng’s injury in the second leg of the season.

The 27-year-old striker suffered a head injury during a KWPL match against Zetech Sparks and spent on the sidelines for long spells.

“Her injury came at a time when we expected so much from her, especially on the leadership front. She used to talk and motivate the younger players and when she got injured, we lost direction in the team something that has made us lose and draw in very key games,” said Muganga

Muganga however disputed claims that his team may have been affected by changes in coaching that were occasioned by the departure of Coach Joseph Oyoo and the arrival of Fred Majani.

“I don’t think the change in coaching was an issue because even before Oyoo left we had begun losing our form, the biggest responsibility lay with the players and that is what we are trying to work on ahead of next season,” added Muganga.

Thika Queens will host the 7th-placed Zetech Sparks in Thika Stadium this Saturday for their final match of the season.
