Thika Town MP Wainaina calls for bumper allocation to sports kitty

Thika Town Member of Parliament Patrick Wainaina has urged the government to increase its allocation on the CDF sports kitty from the current Ksh.1.5 million to at least KSh 10 million to help more constituencies venture in talent development.

The first-time MP said that for Kenya to compete and march with sports powerhouses, the government needs to give sporting activities a premium priority in its budgetary allocations, to enable the sportsmen and women train and use quality equipment in order to march their global competitors.

Speaking at Thika Technical Training Institute grounds during the finals for both football and volleyball tourney sponsored by Thika Town NG-CDF, Wainaina admitted that most legislators are unable to hold such tournaments in support of grassroot talents as the allocated funds is too meagre .

“The national government should consider increasing the sport’s budget at grass root level, 1.5 million is too little for over 100 teams, for instance in this particular tournament the budget went far over 3 million, I had to look for another Ksh 1.5million elsewhere, ”said Wainaina.

In addition, the soft spoken MP noted that most sporting facilities across the country are in dilapidated state making it difficult for youths, in various sports cadre to train.

“At the moment, the country lacks adequate standard stadiums hence the high chances of missing out on hosting major continental and global sports tournaments, the county governments should chip in and rehabilitate the available stadiums,” he  said, challenging the county governments.

At the same time, the MP regretted that most sports clubs have been grappling with lack of key equipment such as jerseys, boots and balls thereby impeding talent growth.

In the Sunday finals, Starehe FC crushed Destiny FC 4-2 on penalties to lift the trophy after a 1-1 draw on a sunny afternoon while in the women finals, Kiambu Ladies effortlessly emerged victorious after sinking Green Commandos 2-0.

The winners pocketed Ksh 75,000 with second, and third placed teams taking home Ksh50,000 and Ksh25,000 in that order.
