More than 50 countries are expected to take part in the 12th edition of the Mombasa Open Tong-Il Moo-Do International Martial Arts Championship in 2025, marking a strong comeback after last year’s scare caused by a lack of government sponsorship.

The tournament is scheduled to run from December 10 to December 23 at the Aga Khan Academy, with the main competition set to begin on December 19.

According to Federation president Master Clarence Mwakio, preparations for this year’s championship are progressing smoothly after the challenges experienced last year.

“We had a lot of challenges last year. The federation faced the regrettable necessity of canceling the championship due to unforeseen and debilitating delays, and the eventual absence of necessary operating funds,” Mwakio explained.

Following the setback, the World Tong-Il Moo-Do Federation (WTMF) barred Kenya from hosting the championship. However, intervention by Cabinet Secretary for Sports Salim Mvurya helped overturn the decision.

“Upon assuming office as CS of Sports, Mvurya ensured that a delegation was sent to South Korea for the World Tong-Il Moo-Do leaders’ meeting at WTMF headquarters. Our mission was simple: present our case, demonstrate our commitment, and secure the lifting of the sanction. I can confidently say the ban is now behind us,” said Mwakio.

He added that the federation is working tirelessly to ensure the 12th edition is a success and expressed gratitude for the government’s renewed support.

“I’m happy the government has committed to sponsoring the championship. We are also encouraging private entities to join us and be part of this global event.”

Mwakio also urged the Mombasa County Government to support this year’s championship after several years of absence.

“Last week, we were in Kwale for the world cycling event, and the county government was among the sponsors. We witnessed how delighted the residents were. It is now time for our own county—Mombasa—to come on board and support the Mombasa Open Tong-Il Moo-Do International Martial Arts Championship 2025.”

This year’s event will feature newcomers such as Germany, Malaysia, Finland, Ireland, and Canada. Meanwhile, Kenya’s team Jasiri is fine-tuning its techniques ahead of the championship.
