Troubled KBF sets AGM for May 21

The much-procrastinated Kenya Basketball Federation Annual General Meeting has again been rescheduled, this time to May 21st at the Nyayo Stadium basketball gymnasium, much to the disappointment of the stakeholders in the country.

Federation Secretary General Ambrose Kisoi has confirmed the development via a letter sent to all stakeholder associations and executive committee members, hinting that the convention will help the federation take stock ahead of the new season, whose tip-off date will be confirmed after the meeting.

“Reference to the earlier notice dated March 31st, 2022 and pursuant to Article 11 of the KBF constitution, notice is hereby given for KBF Annual General Meeting scheduled for Saturday, May 21st, 2022 at Nyayo National Stadium basketball gymnasium as from 2.00 pm.

“Each Club, County branch, Commission, Association and Committee should by May 16th 2022 nominate and send to the Secretary General a name of the representative a copy of the Certificate by the Sports Registrar to enable smooth planning,” read the letter in part.

However, many teams’ representatives have aired their discontent with the agenda of the meeting, saying it does not represent issues ailing the game in the game.

Basil Ogembo, who captains last season’s quarter-finalists Kisumu Lakeside, says critical issues like an overhaul of the constitution, streamlining the election process, fixture administration, and commercialization of the league have been overlooked despite their significance to the welfare of the participants.

“As stakeholders, we feel much of what is ailing the league has been ignored.

“The constitution needs to be overhauled to usher in a new voting system that will allow transparency in the elections.

“Also, the federation should look into the issue of fixtures administration to avoid unnecessary postponements without forgetting the issue of commercializing the league. Many teams are self-sponsored and are collapsing under weight of financial instability.”
