Uganda tame Kenya in ICC World Cup qualifiers

Hosts Kenya lost the first match in the ongoing U-19 ICC Cricket World Cup Africa Qualifiers to neighbors and rivals Uganda, in their third match of the tournament at the Nairobi Jafferys Academy on Tuesday.
Kenya won the toss and chose to field, a gamble that seemed not to favor the team as Uganda ran riot with the bat, pumping in a massive 231 runs. This is the highest score they have chased in this tournament.

First up, Uganda’s top order partnership of Zephania Arinaitwe and Ronald Opio stepped on the crease to try and inflict an early damage to the Kenyans. The duo managed a total of 53 runs that included eight boundaries. Kenyan bowler Gerald proved too good for the duo bowling them out before they caused more problems to the team.

The middle order would then light up action, Ugandans taking control. Stephen Wabwose and Kenneth Waiswa added a further 152 runs with 12 boundaries between them.

Uganda’s star player Siraje Nsubuga almost got a half century, eventually taken out for 43 runs. Uganda then piled up a massive target of 231 runs.

First up for Kenya in batting was the powerful duo of Aman Gandhi and Dennis Musyoka to try and reduce the damage inflicted by the Ugandans.

But their run was short-lived; Gandhi could not replicate his form in the last two matches where he managed 145 runs, achieving a dismal 19 runs in 23 balls faced.

His partner, Musyoka, would also fall short, sent back to the pavilion after facing four balls and getting only two runs. Musyoka was caught out by Wabose from Bukenya’s spin bowling.

Ugandan bowlers continued their ruthless display, crushing Kenya’s top order and middle order restricting them to a maximum 79 runs.Only Timothy Ochieng’s 54 runs and Sachin Budhia’s 52 were runs above half century, the highest score recorded by the Kenyan side.

Uganda eventually carried the day winning by 69 runs, remaining the only unbeaten side in this tournament. Kenya is second with two wins in three matches so far.

In other results, Ghana sunk Botswana, winning by 6 wickets.
