Ulinzi Starlets coach Wambua optimistic of good finish

Ulinzi Starlets head coach Joseph Wambua is optimistic that they will finish in the second position of the Kenya Women Premier League (KWPL) campaign this season.

Wambua who led his charges in registering a goalless draw against Trans Nzoia Falcons on Sunday which left them on the second position on the log with 35 points, believes that the one point difference between them and Thika Queens who occupy third position will not scare them in fulfilling their dream.

Vihiga Queens have been confirmed the title champions after reaching 50 points mark by beating Zetech Sparks 2-0 in match played on Saturday, May 14, in Mumias Sports Complex as only four matches remaining for the league to end.

“First, I want to congratulate Vihiga for clinching the title. They really deserve to win it. Currently we are second and I don’t see us losing the four matches remaining. I am urging my players to be focus to achieve that dream.

Wambua however, said that their dream to clinch the title was shuttered y missing crucial players in his squad.

“My squad was affected at the start of the season after some of my crucial players like Neddy Atieno landed jobs elsewhere and by doing so I had no option but to build a new team. I congratulate them for the good job done as we look forward for the second position which isn’t bad considering that we are paying in the Premier League for the second time.”

The title victory sees Vihiga reclaim their spot at the top of the Kenyan women’s football mountain, having watched their run of three consecutive titles surprisingly ended by Thika Queens last season.

The Vihiga-based side is now the most successful in top-flight history, tallying a record of four league titles in five seasons according to recent league records, followed by Thika Queens (two titles in 2016, and 2021).

A total number of six matches will be on card this weekend - Gaspo will play Bunyore Starlets at the Stima Members Club Nairobi, Kangemi Ladies will entertain Vihiga Queens at Ligi  Ndogo Nairobi while Nakuru Queens will squire it out with  Kayole Starlets.

Sunday fixtures will see Thika Queens play Trans Nzoia Faclons at their backyard in Thika, Ulinzi Starlets will play Kisumu Starlets in Ruaraka while Zetech will try to bounce back against Wadadia at GEMS Cambridge in Nairobi.
