Africa Zone Three bantamweight gold medalist Hassan Shaffi Bakari hailed the quality of opposition on display at the National Boxing League after Kenya Police swept the honours on Saturday.

Police accumulated 30 points to top the league contest staged at Emuhaya Constituency in Vihiga County where 15 teams had gathered with Bakari taking home the feather weight title.

Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) finished second with Kenya Prisons rounding off the top three places.

“We met serious opposition despite winning," Bakari said.

Vihiga County, Nakuru, Siaya, Nairobi, Kibra, Kisumu, Homabay, Trans Nzoia, G44, Mbaraki, Kajiado and Busia are the other teams that competed.

The Boxing Federation of Kenya (BFK) Secretary General David Munuhe said the choice for Vihiga as host was to sensitize locals about the sport given that Vihiga has been honouring matches across other regions.

"After two weeks the second leg will be in Siaya County our aim remaining outreach to local boxing talent," Munuhe said.

Chief Officer Sports in Vihiga Silvester Kaane lauded BFK for bringing the tourney in Vihiga.

"We have not only enjoyed the game but also reaped big economically for hosting these games," Kaane said.
