Vihiga Queens target Gaspo scalp in WPL

Vihiga Queens head coach Boniface Nyamunyamuh is optimistic they will defeat Gaspo when both teams lock horns on Saturday at Stima Members Club in Nairobi in a Kenyan Women Premier League (KWPL) encounter.

Vihiga lead the league with 47 points, 11 ahead of second-placed Ulinzi Starlets while their weekend opponents Gaspo are third with 31 points and Nyamunyamuh is eyeing nothing but victory to strengthen their grip on top spot.

“We are very much prepared for the match and the morale is high. Our main focus was on the striking department which was a bit sluggish in our last match but we have rectified that going to the match.

“At least now we have hope of clinching the title being that we have opened 11 points gap between us and Ulinzi, and I a urging my girls to continue fighting hard and winning the rest of the matches so that we can win the league in style,” Nyamunyamuh said.

Vihiga will have to do without Ugandan midfielder Joan Nabirye who earned a call up to her National team (Uganda Crested Cranes) ahead of the African Women Cup of National (AWCON) tournament to be held in Morocco in July.

“It’s a huge blow for the team considering that Nabirye is one of our lethal players in the team. She has been solid all though and apart from scoring, she had also provided countless assists. However we have other options and for us is just to wish her and the National team all the best as they gear up for the biennial tournament.”

Elsewhere at the Mumboha Stadium in Vihiga, Bunyore Starlets will host Kisumu All Starlets while Zetech Sparks will entertain Kangem Ladies at the GEMS Cambridge, Nairobi.

Three matches will be on card on Sunday whereby Kayole Starlets will play Wadadia at the Stima Members Club, Nairobi while Nakuru City Queens will play Trans Nzoia Falcons at the ASK Showground in Nakuru.

The defending champions Thika Queens will play Ulinzi Starlets at the Thika Stadium in Thika.
