Former world 5000- and 10000-meter champion Vivian Cheruiyot says she is planning to retire from athletics in the next one or two years.

Speaking after the London Marathon on Sunday, Cheruiyot said she still has a couple of races to go, and she will hang up her spikes after a stellar career in long-distance races.

“I think I am going to do a couple of marathons. I don’t have much time to run. I think in one or two years I will hang up my spikes,” said Cheruiyot

Cheruiyot is impressed despite finishing fifth in the London Marathon after deciding to join the race late.

“I am happy with my performance in London. I gave my best in the race despite changing my plans in the last minute because I was to race in Hamburg on the same day, so I am pleased to have the organizers allow me in the last minute,” added Cheruiyot

Cheruiyot is now focused on winning a few more races before bowing out on a high.

“I will keep working hard and giving my best in every race, and I hope to end my career on a high, which I know with hard work and dedication it will be possible,” stated the former champion.
