Wanjala hails improved chess standards at Mang'u Youth Championship

Chess Kenya president Benard Wanjala has acknowledged the significant strides made in the sport’s championships for 2024, noting that the level of competition has reached new heights.

Wanjala thus says this signals a promising future for Kenyan chess enthusiasts.

Speaking during the opening of the 2024 National Chess Youth Championships at Mang’u High School, Wanjala said that the improvement of the competition reflects the dedication of players and organisers but also highlights the growing interest within Kenya.

The president, who is serving his second term, also called for more funding as a strategic move to sustain and enhance the momentum gained in the chess community.

“Looking at the level of the play that I have seen in most of the categories, we expect a very tough match. There is a lot improvement in terms of play if you check the quality in all categories where some of the best players have already lost.

“The biggest challenge we are facing currently is funding. It’s quite expensive to hold this together, this is the time we need those partners,” he appealed.

On their part, the players’ anticipation for a fair game in the 2024 championships is palpable as they aspire not only to showcase their skills but also to experience the thrill of competition on a level playing field.

Led by Inicia Barrack, the players’ prospect of winning the 2024 championships holds immense significance for them, serving as a testament to their dedication, perseverance, and strategic acumen.

“I have played two games today and I have one point, I moved my Queen to the wrong position and once moved to check mate. Someone was making some noise behind me and I lost concentration. However, I want to win the 2024 Championships and probably become the best in Africa.”

The 2024 Championships has attracted over 5,000 youths from across the countries who are participating in seven different categories as defined by their ages.

The opportunity for the winners in each category to travel to South Africa for more challenges adds another layer of excitement to the chess landscape.

The finals are set for Monday at Mwai Kibaki Amphitheatre, Mang’u High School in Juja Constituency.
