Warriors coach Balozi hails trio after win over Thunder

Ulinzi Warriors head coach William Balozi has hailed the trio of Eric Mutoro, Victor Bosire, and James Mwangi for coming up big in their weekend 72-66 clutch win against Strathmore University Thunder at Nyayo Stadium Gymnasium on Sunday in the basketball premier league.

Warriors were on the verge of total collapse in the fourth quarter but back-to-back baskets from the trio in the last two minutes put the game beyond Thunder’s reach and effectively thwarted a potential comeback from a side that had restored parity with 3:30 on the clock.

While attributing his team’s latest triumph to the experience and individual qualities of his players, Balozi said they will have to be more unpredictable and also box out properly in the fourth quarter to prevent opponents from fancying their chances against them.

“We played well but collapsed in the second half. Our priority now should be to be as unpredictable as possible.

“Strathmore is a very good side and they caught us for our reduced work rate in the third and fourth quarters.”

Team skipper Eric Mutoro expressed his joy for registering another victory against Strathmore whom he deems to be among the best sides in the league this season.

“Thunder is a very good side because they can adjust their play at any point in the game.

“The moment they tied the game we knew we had to dig deep and rely on our experienced players to prevail and I’m glad we managed to pull that one.”

Strathmore Thunder head coach Tony Ochieng rued his side’s failure to convert the last two free-throws that could have seen them overtake Warriors with a minute on the clock.

“We sealed our fate when we failed to knock down those free throws because that gave Warriors a chance to retake the lead.

“They have very experienced players in Mutoro, Mwangi, and Bosire who can call the game at any point,” he told Citizen Digital.
