Stephen
Waruru is studying for his coaching badges after announcing an end to his
illustrious 18-year career as a player.
The footballer
has already completed a Confederation of African Football (CAF) D Licensing
lessons and is already enrolled for a CAF C category.
The
Thika-based Waruru told Citizen Digital he has taken important lessons from his
immediate former boss Anthony Akhulia, which will shape his new journey.
“I have
played under so many coaches but I have realized that coaching is not just
knowing football, you need to know your players, befriend them and understand
what they want on and off the pitch. My boss Anthony Akhulia is one of a kind.
“I will
borrow a few lessons from my former coaches and I am sure I will have a
successful career also as a coach,” he said.
Waruru is
also a professional plumber, who spends his time at construction sites when he
is away from the pitch.
Waruru, a
Golden Boot winner during the 2011 Kenya Premier League (KPL) season, joined
Thika United in 2005 before joining Ulinzi Stars where he enjoyed the best
years of his career.
He won the
2010 KPL title with the soldiers in 2010.
After
bagging the top scorer award in 2011, Waruru emerged the runner-up in the race
to clinch the Most Valuable player in Kenya's top flight league.
