Newly appointed Vihiga Queens captain, Marceline Wayodi is ready
for the task of leading her teammates in the quest to keep the club competitive
following the departure of predecessor, Enez Mango.
Speaking to Citizen Digital, Wayodi said that despite being
relatively new at the club, it spoke volumes that the management and her fellow
teammates trusted her enough for the responsibility.
“It’s my second season at the club. The least I can do is giving
my all for the club,” she said.
“I know the task ahead is
not that easy because Mango has done a very great job, but for the management
and players to have confidence in me is a challenge I can’t afford to fail in task
ahead.”
Wayodi, who is also a teacher by profession, says that her
experience having served as captain of her previous teams, including Wadadia,
alongside her teaching experience has given her a solid platform to be able to
handle the pressure.
“I just lead by example,” she said.
“When it’s time for training or the match, I ensure I’m the first
to arrive at the training venue. I also try to create that rapport between the
players and the technical bench,” she added.
“I’ve captained other teams; my High School, Jera High and
Wadadia. Being the voice of the coach to the players on the field is something
else. I know I have to speak to them in an effective language depending on the
situation to get the best,” she explained, noting that her teaching career
helps in delivering in her role."
In spite of the exit key players including Mango, Vivian
Nasaka and Topista Situma from Vihiga, the new players are capable of filling
their voids if the team creates a comfortable environment for them to settle,
according to Mango.
“It is important to help them understand what the team needs,
our playing style and generally, give them guidance through our experience.”
Vihiga United are the reigning KWPL Champions and bagged the
Cecafa Club Championship trophy last season.
They managed one win in the inaugural CAF Women's Champions League in Egypt last year, and qualified for this year’s edition, but were unable to take part owing to the current FIFA ban imposed on Kenyan football.
