Weightlifter Wamalwa training hard ahead of World Champs

Kenyan weightlifter Stephen 'Superheavy' Wamalwa has intensified his training aiming ahead of the World Championship later this year.

At the age of 32, Wamalwa is the reigning national champion and third best in Africa.

“My main opponent is from Morocco who holds the African record for lifting 380 kg and the second is a Ghanaian who has the record for lifting 370 kg while I am third after lifting 365 kg,” said Wamalwa.

Wamalwa who started with rugby before switching to weightlifting is now aiming to lift above 390kgs, in a bid to fulfil what he calls childhood dreams.

“Since I was a child I used to like lifting heavy things and even running while carrying them, and now I am thankful that it has become a big sport in my life and I aim to break the African record through world competitions.”

The star is now aiming to lift more than 390kg in the coming competition which will be held next month in a yet to be decided venue and dates.

A daunting task lies ahead as he aims to challenge Christopher "3-in-1" Oketch's national record lifting 370kg set in 2019.

Oketch is a two-time Kenya's Strongest Man (2018 and 2019 winner) and Wamalwa on the other hand is also a two-time winner of Kenya Strongest Man title (2015 and 2016).
