Wekesa Cup at stake as Homeboyz, Impala clash

The weekend Kenya Cup tie between Menengai Cream Homeboyz and Resolution Impala Saracens will also double as a contest for the ‘Wekesa Cup’ in an initiative sponsored by Kings Rugby Development Academy (KRDA).

The Cup will be played in memory of the Wekesea brothers, Andrew and Peter, who passed away this year in tragic circumstances.

Coincidentally, both had turned for either side during their playing days before their deaths which came just 11 months apart.

Andrew, the younger of the Wekesa’s was attacked and stabbed by thugs in Mlolongo, Machakos County in January while Peter and his twin John were killed in a fatal accident in Mombasa.

In a statement, Homeboyz reiterated the importance of the Cup in honouring their former players.

“This weekend we honor The Late Peter, John and Andrew in the KRDAWekesaCup that will be played against Impala RFC in Nairobi.

“The Cup is sponsored by Kings Rugby Development Academy (KRDA) and honours the Late Andrew and Peter Wekesa who played for both Homeboyz RFC and Impala RFC.

“The Cup will be in contention with the aggregate score deciding the winner,” a statement from Homeboyz portal read.

The Cup winner will be determined on aggregate result at the end of the Kenya Cup season.

Homeboyz and Impala have enjoyed perfect starts to the new Kenya Cup season having won all their respective matches so far.

Players of both teams will wear black armbands and obey a minute of silence in honour of the departed rugby souls.
