World Athletics has ratified the women’s 1500m and 5000m world records set by Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon in June.

The indefatigable Kipyegon smashed both world records in a span of one week at the Diamond League circuit in Europe.

The first of the records came in Florence on June 2 where she clocked 3:49.11 over the 1500m to smash the previous mark of 3:50.07 held by Ethiopia’s Genzebe Dibaba since 2015.

Just a week later in Paris, the double Olympic and world champion obliterated the 5000m world record after running an astonishing 14:05.20 in what was her third ever race over the 12 and half-lap race.

The previous mark of 14:06.62 was held by Ethiopia’s Letesenbet Gidey who finished second behind Kipyegon in the race.

“I didn’t think about the world record, I don’t know how I made it,” said a surprised Kipyegon. “I just wanted to improve on my PB, the world record was not my plan. I just ran after Gidey – she is an amazing lady.”

Kipyegon would later add another world record over the mile at the Monaco Diamond League on July 31 with the record still pending ratification.
