Oaks were relegated from the KRU Championship in the 2022/2023 season but have made an instant return after just one season thanks to their 23-9 victory against Project 61 last weekend in the KRU Nationwide play-offs semi-final.
“The first key thing was the players; because when the players agreed they were getting down to the nation wide they agreed together and they said they were gonna make it back to the championship. So I kept most of the players in the team and that gelling has made us a great team and most of the players agreed that we needed to work hard for us to get back to the championship.”
Matekwa says it has not been an easy season in the nationwide league but thanked his charges for remaining steadfast in their quest for promotion.
“Playing nationwide is very hectic because you prepare the team for a game and on reaching the venue you find the team that you’re supposed to play against is not coming or the referees that were supposed to officiate the game are not available or even the field is not well marked and is in the interior. But I have to congratulate the players and the school administration because they gave us the support and we made it.”
The Oaks will be hoping to round off their unbeaten season with silverware as they face TUM (Technical University of Mombasa) Marines on June 8.
“As of now I’m really fighting for it (Nationwide league title) because my title for the players is that we need to emerge victorious unbeaten throughout the season and that’s the key thing and we are still sharpening for the final and hoping it will fall into place.”
TUM Marines also secured promotion to the KRU Championship league after defeating Sigalagala pirates 26-23 in the second nationwide semi-final played last weekend.
