Kenya to send 290 athletes to African Games

Kenya will send a strong contingent of 290 athletes to take part in 22 disciplines in the forthcoming 12th Africa Games to be held in Rabat, Casablanca, El Jadida and Khemisset in Moroccan cities between August 16-31 Speaking to the press at the team’s training camp in Kasarani; Team Kenya’s Executive Officer Charles Nyaberi exuded confidence that the Kenyan team will do well in Morocco. Kenya will field teams in athletics, archery, badminton, basketball 3-on-3, boxing, canoe Kayak, rowing, chess, cycling, handball, judo, karate, shooting, swimming, table tennis, tennis, triathlon, indoor volleyball, beach volleyball, weightlifting and wrestling. In the last African Games in held in Congo, Brazzaville, Kenya earned a total of 32 medals; six gold, nine silver and 17 bronze. This performance was a far cry from the 50-medal scoop at the tenth Africa Games staged in Maputo, Mozambique in 2010. The Ministry of Sports, through the Sports Fund has facilitated the entering of a 290-strong contingent into the games who, together with 86 Training Partners have pitched camp at Moi International Centre, Kasarani and other training venues in its environs. The beach volleyball and swimming teams are training in Mombasa. Half of the Kenya contingent has already reported for residential training at Kasarani. The steering Committee for the games chaired by Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed and assisted by P.S. Kirimi Kaberia on Monday unveiled the Games Management Committee under Chef de Mission Ndiritu Gikaria who is the Kenya National Sports Council Chairman. Other key management officials include Shadrack Kitili Maluki as Deputy Chef de Mission, Paul Mutwii (General Team Manager)David Ngug (Deputy general Team Manager),Charles Nyaberi (Executive Officer) and John Nyabwari (Chief Finance Officer).
