14 people killed as herders, bandits clash in Samburu

Fourteen people are dead after a gun battle between herders and bandits in Suyan, Samburu County on Wednesday night.

Samburu County Commissioner Abdrizak Jaldesa said nine bandits died with five herders losing their lives in the deadly confrontation that left three people injured. 

One of the victims is admitted at Maralal Referral Hospital with serious injuries, while two are admitted at Barsaloi hospital.

The bandits however managed to escape with livestock which police estimate to be around 500 heads of cattle.

The county commissioner confirmed the incident saying three people were shot dead in their homes.

He said police mobilised on receiving news of the attack and managed to recover 90% of the stolen animals.

"We mobilised our teams and by 9pm yesterday night we were able to recover 90 percent of the animals earlier stolen unfortunately we lost some lives… We will do a thorough follow up to ensure the animals that have not been stolen are traced…," said the commissioner.

A group of local leaders visited with the affected families on Thursday.
