Okutoyi out of Australian Open after superb run
Kenyan Angela Okutoyi fell to a straight sets defeat of 6-2, 6-3 at the hands of Lola Radivojevic as her superb Australian Open run ended in the third round at Melbourne Park earlier today.
After some eye-catching performances in the opening rounds of the junior competition, Okutoyi seemed unable to cope with Radivojevic’s intensity with the contest ending in just 65 minutes.
Okutoyi let the game slip off her in the second set when she suffered two breaks, allowing her opponent to lead 4:0 and the Serbian never relinquished that advantage as she advanced to the quarterfinals.
She will face first seed Petra Marchinko of Croatia in the battle for a place in the semi-finals.
History was made Tuesday when Okutoyi advanced to the third round of the Australian Open junior championship after routing home girl Zara Larke becoming the first Kenyan to attain such a feat.
She is also just the second Kenyan girl to play at a Junior Grand Slam after Susan Wakhungu who featured at Wimbledon in 1978.
