13 arrested over female genital mutilation in Kuria West
Kuria West sub county police Commander Mr.Cleti Kimaiyo said the suspects were arrested during a night raid conducted by the police in collaboration with the provincial administrators at Korogate and Komoronge villages.
Mr.Kimaiyo said they were targeting homes where they had information that girls had been circumcised. He said they 13 were arrested for failing to report FGM and also subjecting the girls to circumcision.
The sub county police commander said eleven girls who have been mutilated were also found in the homes raided by the police.
The suspects are in police custody waiting to be arraigned in court tomorrow. Meanwhile a section of church leaders in Kuria region have appealed to the community to stop the female genital mutilation saying that the act is not only illegal but also retrogressive.
Pastor Gilbert Chacha said the community should realize that FGM is creating more problems in Kuria community and they should avoid it.
Meanwhile over 160 girls have been rescued from the FGM in Kuria region as the police and other stakeholders continue with the fight.
