Kenya approves Pfizer vaccine doses for its 15-18 years population

  • The Pfizer vaccination, however,  will be the only one accessible for the 15-18 age group, according to Ministry of Health CS Mutahi Kagwe, who spoke to the media on Sunday afternoon.

Kenya has extended COVID-19 vaccination eligibility to its adolescent population, stating that those aged 15 to 18 can receive their dosage of the FDA-approved Pfizer (PFE.N)/BioNTech vaccine.

The Pfizer vaccination, however,  will be the only one accessible for the 15-18 age group, according to Ministry of Health CS Mutahi Kagwe, who spoke to the media on Sunday afternoon.

The vaccine which has also received the go-ahead for emergency use for populations 15 years and above in the country by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board, will see Kenya move a step forwards, towards vaccinating 30 million people by end of next year.

“Pharmacy and Poisons Board has reviewed and given Emergency Use Authorization for the administration of Pfizer vaccines for all persons 12 years of age and above as recommended by WHO,” CS Kagwe said on Sunday.

“We are expecting 4million doses of this vaccine which will be administered to the teenagers,”

Kenya has received 10.7 million doses of assorted vaccines so far,  and is set to receive 8 million more in the coming weeks.

According to CS Kagwe, the goal to vaccinate 30 million Kenyans by the end of 2022, will also require the country’s younger population to get vaccinated.

“This means that beyond our adult population, we must also vaccinate the young people who in most cases, though not bearing the burden of the disease, are the main carriers and therefore spreaders of the virus." CS Kagwe added

"As such, it is important to get them vaccinated to reduce their chances of transmitting the virus,”

Kenya had administered a total of 6,388,427 vaccines by November 20, with 3,986,501 partially vaccinated and 2,401,926 fully vaccinated.

The govt hopes to o have fully vaccinated 10 million adults by end of 2021
