Deputy President William Ruto has dismissed claims of a looming dispute with his newfound partners Musalia Mudavadi (ANC) and Moses Wetangula (Ford-Kenya) over the political outfit’s presidential flagbearer ahead of the August showdown.

The DP said the alliance’s focus is on leading the country to prosperity and not who will carry the mantle, adding that any one of them is perfectly capable of leading the outfit and the country at large.

The DP was speaking in Nakuru on Wednesday where the three parties, which have now merged under ‘Economy First/Uchumi Kwanza’, held a joint rally post the earthquake announcement.

“Anyone in our alliance can be president, anyone in the alliance is capable of steering the team to State House…hatujakuja hapa kwa sababu ya ubinafsi, hatujakuja kwa sababu ya mamalaka…tumekuja pamoja ili tuokoe Kenya," Ruto said.

“Alice Wahome anaweza kuongoza Kenya, Rigathi Gachagua, Moses Wetangula, Musalia ama Hustler; wote wanaweza kuongoza Kenya. Ya muhumu si nani ataongoza mbali ni kuboresha maisha ya Wakenya.”

Citing his past support as well as that of Mudavadi and Wetangula to ODM leader Raila Odinga in previous elections, Ruto downplayed the former premier’s politics saying it was aimed at satisfying personal interests.

“We all united to back Raila for the presidency but he betrayed us. We are united against the things which are affecting the country. This mission is unstoppable. Let people not think they can dictate to us who we form partnerships with,” Ruto said.

“Yule mzee tunashindana na yeye anatuambia kazi yake ya kwanza ni kubadilisha katiba alafu kazi yake ya pili ni kupeana handouts. Tunataka kumwambia kuwa hawa vijana wanataka kazi si handouts.”

Mudavadi seconded Ruto’s sentiments saying their move was aimed at uniting to save the country economically and bring forth a leader who has the people’s interests at heart.

"Kenya kwanza is a coalition of freedom, to defend the Constitution of Kenya and dedicated service for the people of Kenya. It will target the growth of the economy of Kenya and say no to any form of intimidation and discrimination,” said Mudavadi.

The former Vice President went further to castigate the handshake team and President Uhuru’s Kenyatta legacy as unfocused to the basic needs of Kenyans, but rather settling on non-crucial developments.

He faulted Uhuru’s focus on infrastructural developments saying it lacked focus on the ordinary Kenyans, that he should rather have focused on improving the economy which would improve livelihoods.

"Azimio ni mradi wa serikali. Mwananchi hakuli barabara na airport. Mwananchi anataka ajira. Tusidanganyane! Na huo mradi wa serikali wa Azimio utakoma, huo mradi ni white elephant,” he added.
