‘ANC lazima itafute marafiki nje ya OKA,’ Malala says as he attends DP Ruto Eldoret rally

Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala speaks at the Eldoret Sports Ground during a rally.

  • He dismissed assertions from his rivals who have accused him of misleading Mudavadi in regards to forming a coalition with UDA.
  • He labeled the meeting held by pro-Raila Odinga Luhya leaders in Bukhungu Stadium on New Year’s Eve as inconsequential.

Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala has underscored that it is imperative for the Amani National Congress (ANC) party, to which he is affiliated, to form strong political coalitions ahead of the August general elections.

According to Malala, coalitions are invaluable and they create effective structures to ensure that the expectations of both elected leaders and their supporters are realized.

Malala spoke on Saturday during a mega rally hosted by Deputy William Ruto at the Eldoret Sports Club Grounds.

“Sisi kama chama cha ANC tuko kwa OKA lakini lazima tutafute marafiki beyond OKA. Mheshimiwa Mudavadi akikuja hapa kutafuta marafiki na bahati mbaya ama bahati mzuri apate huyu rafiki anaitwa hustler, ni makosa kweli?” he posed.

While labeling the meeting held by pro-Raila Odinga Luhya leaders in Bukhungu Stadium on New Year’s Eve as inconsequential, Malala dismissed assertions from his rivals who have accused him of misleading Mudavadi in regards to forming a coalition with the DP’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.

“Na mimi nimeona wale watu ya azimio wameanza kuniekea mdomo ati mimi napeleka Musalia kwa naibu wa rais. I want to tell those people that your enemies are not necessarily our enemies, and your friends are not necessarily our friends. Nyinyi pangeni marafiki wenu na sisi tupange wetu,” he added.

The Kakamega Senator consequently underscored that he had graced the event to push the agenda of the Luhya community and not for his own individual gain as might have been perceived.

“Mkiona niko hapa, mimi sijakuja hapa kwa sababu yangu. Nimekuja hapa kama mwakilishi wa jamii ya Waluhya kuomba urafiki na jamii ya Wakalenjin tufanye kazi pamoja,” said Malala.

ANC has however since distanced itself from the Kakamega Senator’s attendance of the event and his utterances saying he was in no capacity speaking on behalf of the party or its leader.

“The ANC party would like to distance itself with the activities talking place at Eldoret Sports Club Grounds where UDA party is holding its rally. ANC has not sent anybody to represent either the party or the party leader in the said function,” the party said in a statement by Secretary General Simon Gakuru.

The Senator has since however responded to Gakuru's statement saying, in his address, he neither spoke on behalf of the party not the party leader.

“As an elected leader, my role is to propel our members towards forming the next government. Anyway, our new SG is still under orientation," he tweeted.
