Top stars to clash at Discovery Kenya Cross Country
A galaxy of stars will face off at the 31st edition of the Discovery Kenya Cross Country set for Sunday at the Eldoret Sports Club.
According to race organiser, David Letting, both elite and upcoming athletes will compete in the four categories; 6km junior women, 8km junior men and 10km senior men and women.
Letting also explained that the winners will bag Sh25,000 for the senior races and Sh15,000 for the junior races with the top finishers going home with prizes.
The race will go down just a week after the National Cross Country Championships were held in Lobo Village, Just a short distance from the Sports Club.
“The preparations are almost complete. Since it will be the final Cross Country event for our local athletes, we expect a huge turn-out. Due to Covid-19 challenges we will not have events for children and thus we will only have four events on Sunday,” Letting told Citizen Digital.
Letting also disclosed that the race will be ideal for track and field athletes who are preparing for the upcoming busy season.
“Cross Country races is usually very important for any athlete going into a new season. Since we have major championships this year like the World Championships and Commonwealth Games, I expect many renowned athletes to show up on Sunday,” said the veteran coach.
The event which is the oldest race in the country has seen many winners who turn to global superstars such as Olympic marathon champion Peres Jepchirchir and world 10000m bronze medallist Rhonex Kipruto among others.
Robert Kiprop and Daisy Cherotich were crowned champions in last year’s senior races in the men’s and women’s categories respectively.
