The Cabinet has approved the proposed dualling of the 20.2km Nairobi Northern Bypass, a key infrastructure upgrade aimed at reducing traffic congestion and enhancing road safety.
The Cabinet meeting, chaired by President William Ruto at
State House, Nairobi, on Tuesday, marks a critical step in improving traffic
flow and boosting access to economic hubs, industrial zones and other essential
services in Nairobi and Kiambu counties.
Stretching from Ruaka in Kiambu to Ruiru, and connecting with
both the Western and Eastern bypasses, the road currently remains Nairobi's
only bypass that is still a single carriageway.
This has consistently led to frequent traffic congestion,
slower travel times, and increased risk of accidents due to limited
capacity.
The project will include the construction of eight
interchanges, overpasses, and underpasses, as well as the development of non-motorised
transport facilities, including walkways and cycle paths, improved drainage
systems, and enhancements to adjacent roads.
