Taka Taka Ni Mali (TTNM), a member of the East African Business Councill entered into partnership with Alliance for Science in a strategic move on advocacy for climate action on waste management.

The two will convene the first in a series of high-level regional conferences dubbed ‘Africa Waste is Wealth Series (AWWS)’ under the theme Promoting Effective Waste Management Practices for Environmental Conservation and Climate Change Mitigation, to be held in Nairobi on June 6-8th, 2023.

Speaking at a signing ceremony in Nairobi, Dr. Sheila Ochugboju, Executive Director, of Alliance for Science said there is need to address waste management challenges.

“According to the Africa waste management report 2022 there is an urgent need for African countries to address current waste management challenges and to prepare for the expected growth in waste generation in the coming century.

“We as the Global South have solutions to waste management that the Global North can learn from, as we strive to balance the needs of people, planet and sustainable legacies for future generations,”  noted Dr. Sheila Ochugboju.

Mary Ngechu, TakaTaka ni Mali’s patron stated on her part notes that: “This conference will unite government institutions, private sector actors, development partners, and finance organizations to develop the necessary regional commitments to scale best-practice sustainable waste management models.”

The conference aims to identify policy and regulatory priorities for sustainable waste management, showcase innovative approaches in commercializing sustainable waste management, demonstrate the use of technology in sustainable waste management, and adopt a plan of action for green financing investments in sustainable waste management.

The conference is also expected to contribute to locally led climate actions, promoting the acceleration of nationally determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans for African countries by exploring the potential of waste management as a driver for economic empowerment and job creation while advancing circular economy principles of eliminating waste and pollution, circulating products and materials at their highest value, and regenerating nature.
