Police in Kabarnet have retrieved the body of a Grade 3 pupil reported to have drowned in River Chemorop within Baringo County.

The nine-year-old boy was a pupil at AIC Visa Oshwal public primary school within Kabarnet town.

Reports indicate that the boy had left school in the company of other pupils to go play at the river – as others proceeded for the inter-school games event at the nearby Kaptimbor primary.

The river passes near Kaprogonya Estate – and snakes its way near a playground that is commonly used by children from the estate.

The boy is reported to have drowned on Friday while swimming with the other children.

A relative who lived with the child is said to have become concerned after the boy failed to return home.

It was then that the other children were asked about the whereabouts of their friend – at which point they revealed that they had gone for a swim – and that he didn’t come out.

Kabarnet location Senior Chief Daniel Kimaliny confirmed the incident.

“We received information from members of the public about the missing child. That is when we informed the police who came and helped with the search,” said Kimaliny.

The police helped the residents to retrieve the body from the river.

“I alerted the teachers from the school where the young boy was a pupil. The Deputy Head Teacher came to the scene and identified the deceased as one of their pupils,” said the chief.

The body was taken to Baringo county Referral hospital. Meanwhile the police have begun investigations into the incident.
