Boy killed in hippo attack in Madogo area, Tana River County
A 16-year-old boy has died after he was mauled by a hippopotamus in Tana River County.
The incident, which happened in Saka, Madogo area claimed the life of Mohammed Abdi Sambul.
"The boy was attacked by the hippo along the banks of River Tana. The animal was grazing nearby before it charged at the deceased before crushing him with its powerful jaws," residents told Citizen Digital.
Attempts by locals to wade in so as to rescue the boy went futile since the hippo's enormous jaws had long clamped down on the teenager, killing him on the spot.
Meanwhile, locals in the area have urged the relevant authorities to help address the constant attacks from the hippos.
"Several people in this village bear scars from the vicious attacks by hippos. We call on KWS to address the human-wildlife conflict," a resident said.
