Embu: Bodaboda operators frustrated by hike in fuel prices

Embu bodaboda operators are a dejected lot after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced the new pump prices that saw a litre of super petrol go up by Ksh.20.

Speaking to one operator, Kennedy Gicuku expressed his disappointment saying his hopes have been shuttered by the same government he had banked on to make the already tough life coupled with high cost of living at least bearable.

"We thought that Kenya Kwanza government would lower fuel prices immediately they get into office but we are shocked and devastated by the contrary. Fuel is now at a record high."

Gicuku went on to say: "looks here, cost of living before the new government got into office was already overwhelming, but now it has gotten worse. Cost of electricity has also gone up and with fuel every other commodity will go up in terms of price.

"Our customers are also overburdened; I don't think they can even accept a slight increment on the charges they are used to paying. We are humbly appealing to President Ruto to look into this matter, we are not happy."

Max Otieno, another bodaboda operator says: "A few years ago, business was good because fuel was not as expensive. We could make money to buy fuel, do shopping for our families, pay rent, school fees and since most of us are either employed or paying loans for the bikes, we could also make enough for the owners of the bike per day or pay installments for the loans. With the high cost of fuel currently, we are finished."
